What Love is Today in Our Fallen World

Love is patient, love is kind, Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant…Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Corinthians 13:4,6-7 CSB

It’s June 10, 2020, this was the verse I had today in my Grateful Faith Gratitude Journal. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was that easy: just love one another. But it’s not. We live in a fallen world.

Fall-en. Sounds like falling.

Maybe that’s it, we live in a falling world. Going further and further from God’s perfection. Yet closer and closer to His final redemption.

The end is near, we’re living in the End Times. I hear this more and more. Though we don’t know when the End will finally come we are moving towards it.

Love spelled out in water droplets

Everything that is going on right now, an increase of what has happened before, the fall-ing seems to be increasing.

But what about love? We have emotions, pains, loss. We feel.

Feeling can be hard. Almost like Fall-ing. It’s scary. Especially when we don’t know.

The Un-know-ing

Un-know-ing is difficult. If it’s simply unknown it’s not so bad because it means we can know it. But un-know-ing regardless of whether what we know is true or false is painful.

It is a change of heart. It is a change of who we are. It is a change of our minds, deep within our minds of what we don’t know. If I don’t know you, I can still meet you and then know you. I may like or not like you but I know you and can make a decision based on what I’ve learned about you first hand.

But if I know something about you, Ive been told something about you. Whether true or not, even when I meet you I may and most likely will keep that know-ing in my mind and it will change how I learn about you. Even first-hand meeting you. It may take a while before I am willing or able to change my mind about you.

The un-know-ing. They say a mind stretched can never go back to its original form. I agree. Unfortunately that can mean good or bad. But it can be stretched in a different direction.

Growing up, I learned some things about God and Jesus. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been stretched in a different direction.

Toward truth. The truth about God and Jesus from the Bible.

I’m having to un-know a bit. Sometimes its hard and I have to hear, hear and hear some more before I understand and believe. Romans 10:17, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

I reach out, I learn and I un-know and learn some more. Awkward at times, but good.

So where is Love?

The love that the Bible, that God speaks of?  Love that rejoices in the truth? It is in us. It is in the willingness of us to have our minds stretched. Stretched toward God and one another.

One small unsteady step is what a baby takes. One small unsteady step towards God and each other is where love is.

Faith in Action:

I started this post with the verse: “Love is patient, love is kind, Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not arrogant…Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” 1 Corinthians 13:4, 6-7 CSB

Are you willing to take one small unsteady step towards God and each other is where love is? What one small step can you take towards another that shows love? Would love to hear your response in the comments below. Thanks!
